Philip Bliss (1838-1876) was a performer, composer and writer of Gospel hymns. This tune, perhaps his most well-known, was written to accompany a text by Horatio Spafford (1828-1888), who, despite terrible personal tragedies including the death of an infant son and, later, the loss of his four daughters at sea, was able to exclaim in his hymn, “It is well with my soul.”
In this arrangement, the trombone presents the melody over arpeggiated piano accompaniment on the first time through the hymn, then plays an arpeggiated/scalar descant over the melody on the second time through.
