A Prayer for Every Day

“A Prayer for Every Day” was commissioned and written for the 25th anniversary concert of the Azle, Texas, ISD All-City Elementary Choir (2016) and revised in 2023.

Mary Carolyn Davies (ca. 1888-1940), the author of “A Prayer for Every Day,” was a prolific Oregon writer best known for lyric poems and children’s verse. She published a handful of poetry collections, and in the 1920s her short stories and poetry appeared regularly in magazines such as Collier’s, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, McClure’s, and Poetry, as well as in prominent anthologies. She wrote little after moving to New York in the late 1930s, and little is known about her final years as no records or obituary have been found in either Oregon or New York.

“A Prayer for Every Day” is not specifically religious, but expresses the aspirations of the child in whose voice it is written: to be courageous, truthful, caring of others and kind to them, and forgiving. Especially fitting to young choristers is the concluding aspirational declaration: “To all upon my way, day after day, let me be hope, be joy! Let my life sing!”
