O Holy Spirit, Enter In

“O Holy Spirit, Enter In” (“0 Heiliger Geist, kehr bei uns ein”) is the only text by German pedagogue and hymn-writer Michael Schirmer (1606-1673) to have passed into English, due to the work of Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878), who translated numerous German chorales for English speakers in works such as Lyra Germanica (1854) and The Chorale Book for England (1863).

Schirmer’s text was paired with the chorale tune WIE SCHÖN LEUCHTET, attributed to Phillipp Nicolai. Nicolai also wrote the hymn text known in English as “How Brightly Shines the Morning Star” that is most popularly associated with the tune.

This setting of “O Holy Spirit, Enter In” adapts the WIE SCHÖN LEUCHTET tune and its harmonization by J.S. Bach in a moderately easy arrangement for SAB voices and organ. An ideal way to bring a beloved tune, typically used at Christmas/Epiphany, into Pentecost and for use at confirmations, ordinations, and as a general anthem.
