Born into a Church of England family — her father and brother were both Anglican priests as well as musicians — Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) published several volumes of poems and hymns, devotions, and other prose writings. She is best known for the hymn text, “Take My Life and Let It Be (Consecrated, Lord, to Thee).” This simple yet effective setting for SAB voices and organ is ideal for services of baptism, confirmation, or for use at any time.
Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee;
take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love;
take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.
Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King;
take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.
Take my will and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine.
Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.
Thus my life will truly be consecrated, Lord, to Thee. Amen.
