“And Glory Shone Around” pairs the joyful French traditional carol, “Angels We Have Heard on High,” with the chorale tune WIE SCHÖN LEUCHTET (“How Brightly Shines the Morning Star”) by Phillip Nicolai, in an arrangement that is ideal as a Christmas concert opener.
These two contrasting tunes represent both the majesty of Christ — the Son of God — and the humility of the infant Christ-Child, the Son of Man. A resounding opening allegro featuring brass fanfares, rapid woodwind scales, percussive punctuations and the melismatic “Gloria” evokes “the glory of the Lord [that] shone around” the shepherds tending their flocks near the Christ-Child’s birthplace in Bethlehem and the “multitude of the heavenly host praising God” that suddenly appeared to them, according to the gospel of Luke. A softer andante, featuring the “Morning Star” chorale in 3/4 time, evokes the quiet peace and humble surroundings of Joseph, Mary, and the Holy Child, “wrapped … in swaddling cloths and laid … in a manger.” This chorale builds in intensity before giving way to a recapitulation of the opening allegro, with key change, that powerfully concludes the piece.
