“Personent Hodie” (“Today, Let Earth Resound!”) is a Medieval German carol, ca. 1360, published in the Finnish hymnal/songbook Piae Cantiones (1582).
Gustav Holst (1874-1934) composed a choral setting of the tune in 1916, with text translated and paraphrased by his assistant, Jane M. Joseph. The first verse announces:
On this day, earth shall ring with the song children sing,
to the Lord, Christ our King,
born on earth to save us; him the Father gave us.
[Refrain]: Id-e-o-o-o, id-e-o-o-o, id-e-o, Gloria in excelsis Deo!
In this setting of “Personent Hodie” for concert band, the tune is presented first in a maestoso duple meter, echoing the processional feeling of Holst’s setting, then gives way to a joyful, spiritoso exploration of the tune in triple meter.
