Like the German “Stille Nacht” (“Silent Night”), Polish “W Żłobie Leży” (“Infant Holy, Infant Lowly”), and American “Away in a Manger,” “Niño Lindo” is a Venezuelan carol that evokes the image of the Virgin Mary rocking the Christ-child while singing a lullaby.
Its lyrics state, in part:
“Niño lindo, ante ti me rindo, Niño lindo, eres tú mi Dios.” (“Beautiful boy, before you I surrender, Beautiful boy, you are my God.”)
A popular version of the carol, by American missionary and pastor George Lockwood, translates the opening lines as “Child so lovely, here I kneel before you, Child so lovely, you are Christ, my God.”
Featuring simple-but-engaging melodies and Latin rhythms, “Niño Lindo” is ideal as a change-of-pace selection on a program of Christmas carols.
Score, parts (Bb tpt. 1, Bb tpt. 2, F horn, tbn, tuba) — $12.99
